British Basketball revealed yesterday that the top player from the recently announced Great Britain Under 23′s squad will make the final men’s roster. The official press release states:
One place in the final senior men’s roster is being kept open until after the Future’s tournament in Lille (18-20 June) with the intention of awarding that coveted spot to the most stand-out Future’s player.
GB U23 and Senior Head Coach Chris Finch said;
“I am very excited to get the chance to work with all of these players and be able to evaluate their games and how they may be able to help the senior men’s team. We are confident that some of these players are ready and have the potential to make the senior squad and we are also confident that there will be some pleasant surprises during the week as well.”
Though I guess this is a ‘nice’ idea in principle, I don’t think this is the time nor the place to start experimenting with the GB seniors squad. You tellin’ me if there is a player who is at the men’s camp that is better for the final team, they won’t make the final cut as British Basketball have chosen to keep one roster spot open for a GB U23?! Bad move. If the U23 player gets there on their own merit, it’s a different story but the way it’s being told I’m not so sure…

I’m with you. Just pick the best team already. If that includes 4 u23 players then fine, if it’s none, also fine. I don’t understand the point of this exercise.
Agreed. I think it’s for a kind of ‘cool’ PR stunt type thing-in reality though, Justin is pretty likely to get a spot on the men’s team anyway.
But surely if more than 1 of those players is playing better than the senior tam they should have that space. however this Under 23 team is a great idea but this may force players to become selfish and stat grabbers just to look better than they are. but at least it increases competition now im really looking forward to those highlights lol.
Haha I’m pretty sure if more than one u23 was good enough on merit to get into the men’s squad they would get in; they wouldn’t not let him in just because they’ve said they’re only keeping one spot open.
I don’t think any of this team will be selfish, it’s a good core unit, most of which know each other and I think who will want to just succeed…also a reunion of Brixton with Justin, Ogo and MBA playing together again for the first time in a long time. It’s gonna be sick.
What is the best way to follow this U23 tournament on line?
Would be nice to see there performance, and track their stats
