Cheshire Phoenix Sign Jamell Anderson from BBL Champions

Cheshire Phoenix have snapped up British forward Jamell Anderson from the league champions, Leicester Riders, ahead of the 2016-17 season.

The 26-year-old had spent the past five seasons at Leicester Riders having won six trophies with the club including the league title for a second time earlier this year.

Anderson has played nearly 300 league games in a BBL career that started at Essex Pirates, and received recognition for his improving contributions to the Riders last season.

The former GB U20 forward was named to the All-BBL Defensive Team of the Year as well as picking up the Pete Jacques Award in the annual BJA awards for best British BBL player – which takes into account improvements and contributions.

Anderson becomes Colin O’Reilly’s second summer signing following the capture of Josh Wilcher, and the Irishman is delighted to welcome his new recruit to the club.

“Jamell fits a number of needs for us,” said O’Reilly. “He is a top level defender, and brings championship experience to our club which is huge for us while building our team.

“Jamell has great versatility where he can play multiple positions, which will fit greatly with the other players on the roster.”

General Manager, James Brice added: “This is a fantastic signing for the club – Jamell has proven during his time in the league what a great professional he is.

“He will be an instant hit with our fans and the wider community. We are very excited to have Jamell a part of what we are hoping to build at the Phoenix.”

Anderson becomes the latest player to swap BBL clubs next season, joining the likes of Orlan Jackman, Andy Thomson and Danny Huffor who will be wearing different jerseys come September.

It is understood that Anderson looked at options overseas, before deciding to remain in the BBL and join Cheshire.
