Team USA, NBA & WNBA Coming To Manchester

Team USA NBA WNBA in Manchester
Both Team USA men’s and women’s teams will be coming to Manchester next year, playing a Global Community Cup tour game in July 2012 as part of their preparations for the London Olympics after the completion of a multi-year partnership between the NBA, WNBA, Manchester City Council and USA Basketball that was announced yesterday.

The deal will also see the first ever WNBA game in Europe as 2010 WNBA Finalists Atlanta Dream take on an unnamed opponent on May 29th of this year at the Manchester Evening News Arena (MEN) and the first NBA preseason game outside of London, in autumn 2013, with the teams to be announced at a later date.

NBA Europe Senior Vice President Sophie Goldschmidt commented:

“We are delighted to bring NBA, WNBA, and USA Basketball games to the internationally renowned sports city of Manchester.  This comprehensive schedule of premier basketball events will help grow the sport for years to come. This partnership shows our ongoing commitment to deepen basketball’s footprint in the country.”

The announcement comes at the start of NBA Basketball Week, a series of grassroots events held in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Sheffield to promote the sport in the UK. It will culminate in a double-header between the Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets at the O2 Arena on Friday and Saturday 4th and 5th March.
