England Under-18 Luke Nelson has committed to NCAA Division 1 school University of California, Irvine.

Nelson, a 6’3″ guard, currently plays for the Reading Rockets in Vcars.co.uk Division 1 and has been a stand out for the national team programme over the past two summers.

“I can really see myself fitting in to the system and excelling in it because I think that it complements my strengths,” Nelson said when explaining to Hoopsfix why he chose UCI. “I think I can go there and have an impact as a freshman.”

A 2011 U18 national championship winner with Worthing Thunder, Nelson also pointed to the fact he wants “a change of scenery” having lived in small towns his whole life.

UCI have had their eye on Nelson since 2011, since his impressive performances at the U16 European Championships in Macedonia where he helped lead England to promotion to Division A, averaging 13.6 points, along with 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

He followed that up this summer, leading England U18s to promotion to Division A averaging a team high 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, whilst being named to the all-tournament team.

The 1995 born rising star added he can’t wait to begin his college experience:

“I’m looking forward everything to to be honest; playing in front of the crowds, playing with the guys at UCI, playing against all the other schools because I know it’ll be a big step up from what I’m doing now, and just the whole college experience.”

Luke also received offers from Davidson, Utah, Idaho State, Hawaii and Elon, plus a couple of offers in Europe, however, he felt the US route was the best one for him.

“I thought it would be good to continue my education,” he said. “Getting to know the guys at UCI, I really felt like going there would be the best option for me.”

Hoopsfix wants to wish Luke all the best with his college career next season!
