NBL Coach of the Year Awards for 2016-17 Season Revealed

Marc Steutel

Basketball England has revealed the winners of the 2016/17 NBL Coach of the Year Awards across Division 1 to 4, which were decided through a combination of team and fan voting.

Team Northumbria made it two for two in Division 1 Men as Head Coach Marc Steutel was recognised by his peers as the best coach in the division, following Malcolm Smith picking up the season’s MVP.

With the North East side securing the league title on the back of a 10 game winning streak to end the regular season, and taking the Cup title earlier in the year, Steutel was honoured to take the award.

“I am humbled and extremely grateful to be voted Coach of the Year for the 2016-2017 season,” he told Hoopsfix.

“Whilst the personal recognition can be pleasing, it’s merely a testament to the quality of the group I was fortunate to work with on a daily basis. I am extremely proud of the culture and environment that is fostered at Team Northumbria. We put great emphasis on togetherness and mental toughness and it’s not easy for every player to adhere to these factors on a daily basis. The group as a whole this year excelled as tough, disciplined, together and selfless group. Having 12 out of our last 14 games on the road and only dropping two games in this stretch is evident of this.

“We had a great mix of returning players, new signings, progressing players and former players returning in which they all competed extremely well and were genuinely happy for each other’s success. A lot of players say that they are happy for each other but to actually live and breathe it for 9 months is a different factor.

“I loved working with this group and am beyond proud to be their coach. I am positive the history making season we have all competed in will provide lasting memories for us all and keep us connected for the rest of our lives.”

After securing fifth place, London Westside’s Sam Stiller picked up the Coach of the Year honours in Division 2.

Team Birmingham’s Steve Hansell and Southwark’s Sterling Muschett both collect awards in Division 3, with Danny Byrne from Manchester Giants II, Ross Norfolk from Essex Blades, Darijus Maldutis from Northants Tauras and Aaron Ebos from Cardiff City rounding out the D4 winners.
