Newcastle Eagles to Welcome European Sides for Pre-Season Tournament

Newcastle Eagles are hosting their second pre-season invitational tournament in September with three European sides taking part in the two-day event, at Sport Central.

Belgian champions Oostende, Danish side Bakken Bears and Estonia’s Tartu Ülikool/Rock are all heading to Tyneside for the MKM Euro Invitational with all three teams competing in this season’s inaugural FIBA Champions League.

Last year, the Eagles took on Swedish champions Sodertalje Kings and Belgium’s Antwerp Giants along with BBL rivals Leeds Force in the three-day event.

“This is sure to be a very exciting and ground-breaking event for British basketball and we are looking forward to showcasing some high-class and quality,” said Eagles’ Managing Director, Paul Blake.

“Supporters at last years event saw one of the best games of last season in our tie against Swedish champions Sodertalje Kings. We will be hoping for more of the same this September and encourage all Eagles fans to come and see what European basketball is all about.

“This event is an important building block in our plans to move to our own purpose built venue in the near future, where more European basketball will be firmly on the agenda.”

Tickets are priced at £10 per day or £17.50 for the two days on September 4-5, and are on sale here.

Leicester Riders are also hosting another European pre-season tournament of their own with the top two clubs in the BBL harbouring plans to compete in Europe themselves.
