BBF Outlines Six Strategic Objectives Following Stakeholder Meeting

The British Basketball Federation (BBF) has outlined six desired strategic outcomes following the end of their consultation with the public via futureofbasketball.co.uk.

Over 1000 people filled out the survey and using a consultation co-ordinated by Deloitte, there were six strategic outcomes identified which were discussed in a stakeholder meeting in London last week with representatives from the respective Boards of Basketball England, Basketball Scotland and Basketball Wales, as well as the Basketball Foundation, British Basketball League (BBL) and Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) clubs.

The strategic objectives were grouped under six strategic outcomes:

– Transform the leadership and culture of the sport
– Drive increased awareness and profile of the sport
– Increase opportunities to play the game at every level
– Support talented player and coach development pathways
– Build high-quality men’s and women’s leagues and clubs
– Develop successful GB teams qualifying for, and competitive in the final stages of FIBA competitions

The meeting explored how stakeholders would work together to transform basketball together over the next decade or so. Barriers and behaviours that might inhibit progress were considered and there was a collective desire to transform the sport through a more open, collaborative and transparent way. Building trust via regular and clear communications between stakeholders and the wider basketball community was identified as being central to this.

The BBF says actions plans, milestones, targets and the accountability to lead and deliver the plans will be developed through collaborative working groups over the coming months, as the BBF prepares to become the FIBA member representing England, Scotland and Wales from October 2016.

The meeting concluded with six declarations of intent:

– We will learn from past experience, benchmark the positives, and proactively embrace future opportunities.
– We will approach everyday with an open, positive attitude as we strive to look forward to make basketball in Britain the best it can be at every level
– We will continue working towards improving basketball in Britain by supporting and getting behind the strategy process 100%.
– We will continue to build relationships to help foster increased belief and confidence in our sport.
– We will consult on a regular basis to ensure the widest and sustained possible buy-in from all basketball stakeholders.
– We will believe, trust, share and collaborate.

A further update will be given after the next BBF Board meeting on 20 May 2016.
