Newcastle Eagles to Honour Charles Smith’s Landmark Achievement

Newcastle Eagles will pay tribute to the remarkable career of Charles Smith with a special video montage ahead of tonight’s game against Durham – with a crowd in excess of 2500 people expected at Sport Central.

Smith has racked up an incredible 6100 points in the BBL in a combined total of 380 games – having scored 19 points in two appearances for the Scottish Rocks in the 2005-06 season. The American-born forward made his BBL debut in 1999 after graduating from Rider University in the States.

The 39-year-old has won 16 pieces of silverware during his time with the Eagles, whilst earning four Finals MVP awards – second only to GB captain Drew Sullivan, who has five.

Throughout the week, the club have been posting daily videos of Smith’s greatest moments; his first season, selected Finals MVP performances, a record-breaking haul against Durham and his latest milestone achieved earlier this season.

1999-2000 – Smith’s first season in the BBL saw him tally 552 points, which stood as his best total until the 2009/10 season (607). His came the following year with 702 points amassed in 33 games.

2005 BBL Trophy Final – Smith earned the MVP award after leading the Eagles to their first piece of silverware with victory over the Brighton Bears with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

2012 BBL Cup Final MVP – Smith set the individual points record with an incredible 39 point haul to lead Newcastle to a convincing 115-94 win against Plymouth, including 21 in the first quarter alone.

2013 – Smith shot 8/10 from 3-point range on his way to 49 points! against Durham as well as adding 16 rebounds in a comprehensive 106-65 league win over their North-East counterparts.

2014 – Another milestone for Smith, as he reached 6,000 career BBL league points with a 20 point haul against Surrey in October.
