Brits Abroad – Week 8 Round-up

Luol Deng starred most notably in a win against Charlotte for Miami Heat (8-6) this week with 19 of his 26 points coming in the first half. Meanwhile, Joel Freeland posted a season-high 9 points on 4-6 shooting in 14 minutes against Philadelphia as the Portland Trail Blazers (11-3) made it eight straight wins with three more victories this week.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning had the biggest performance of the week with a huge 33 points and 14 rebounds to keep Soles (14-4) top of the league at the weekend. The GB forward had also scored 9 points in an earlier victory two days beforehand.

21-year-old Devon van Oostrum made his debut for Kouvot (7-5) in Finland, scoring six points in an opening win for the club before scoring 2 points in a reduced role as his new side completed a successful double-header. Another move saw Pops Mensah-Bonsu joined Hapoel Jerusalem and the Israeli side are flying high at the top of the league with an 8-0 record.

Rob Marsden continues to make the most of more playing time with Cognac (2-7) with a 25 point, 10 rebound double-double in a hard-fought 96-92 loss against NM1 leaders St Chamond. Elsewhere, Shane Walker scored 8 points in an 88-62 win for Lourdes (7-1), while Tafari Toney also tasted victory, adding 12 points and 8 rebounds as Sorgues (5-5) claimed an 77-62 win whereas Gareth Murray suffered defeat with 9 points and 6 boards coming in an overtime defeat for Challans (5-5).

In Pro-B, Ovie Soko didn’t enjoy the best of weeks with Boulazac (4-4) as their losing streak was extended to three games with consecutive losses against Antibes and Lille. Soko scored 17 points and added 9 rebounds in a 97-64 defeat on Saturday having registered just five points in a midweek 76-61 loss.

Myles Hesson produced a big-time block on Tim Ohlbrecht but was unable to finish victorious against his former side, scoring 11 points in an agonising 88-86 loss for Bremerhaven (4-6) against Ratiopharm.

The winning streak of Iserlohn (7-1) rolled on in the German Pro-B with Orlan Jackman again playing his part with 10 points and 8 rebounds in a battle of the Brits. Robert Gilchrist and Karlsruhe were on the receiving end of the defeat with the rookie adding 6 points and 6 boards from the bench in the loss. Clayfell Harris contributed two points and three rebounds to a 74-70 win for Itezhoe (6-3) for their fourth straight victory.

Ashley Hamilton helped Cherkasy (6-4) return to winning ways with an 18 point haul before adding an all-round stat-line of 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in an 86-63 loss. In Liga Endesa action, Dan Clark put in a valiant display against Spanish powerhouse Barcelona with 15 points and 9 rebounds in a 79-64 defeat as Fuenlabrada (1-7) dropped into joint bottom position.

Will Neighbour made his pro debut with 11 minutes in a 79-59 loss for Oviedo (4-5) with Ben Allison and Ourense (5-3) not in LEB Gold action this week. Joe Hart scored five points in an 85-74 loss for Penas Huesca (3-5) while Mo Soluade added the same with Clinicas Rincon (1-7) unable to add to their first win last week. There was a loss for Ben Mockford and Caceres (6-2) in the third division despite his 13 points on 4-4 shooting from downtown while Aaron Geramipoor had the week off with Canarias (0-7).

Yokohama (4-12) suffered contrasting defeats against Eastern conference leaders Iwate Big Bulls in the B-J League at the weekend. Dzaflo Larkai was two points away from a double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds in a heavy 100-55 loss before adding 16 points on 7-8 FG shooting the following day in a 92-78 loss.

In Greece, Fahro Alihodzic enjoyed his first win for AGOR (5-3) adding two points and three rebounds in eight minutes of action while Ogo Adegboye scored 6 points in a 77-65 loss for Aris (4-3). Nigel van Oostrum contributed 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists as Den Helder (6-3) recorded a big win in the Dutch Erevidisie.

Justin Robinson scored 11 points in his second game for Apollon (1-3) in what is his second spell at the club as they fell to a 78-60 defeat. Ryan Richards impressed with 19 points and 9 rebounds in a midweek EuroChallenge defeat before scoring just six points as Kormend (1-8) suffered another league loss.

Liam Potter added 4 points and 6 rebounds as Naestved (4-5) were beaten 88-75 by the leaders in the Danish top flight
