Gareth Murray Leaves Cheshire for French Side Challans

GB forward Gareth Murray has left Cheshire Phoenix after six games with the club in order to pursue an opportunity overseas with French 3rd division side Vendee Challans.

The 30-year-old Scot had been seeking a move to Europe in the off-season following his second summer with the GB Senior side before remaining in the BBL by joining Cheshire for a second time.

Murray now joins fellow Brits Rob Marsden (Cognac), Shane Walker (Lourdes) and Tafari Toney (Sorgues) all playing in the NM1 as well as former BBL stars Will Creekmore and Jay Couisnard. In five league games, Murray averaged 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

Head Coach John Coffino has already lost Renaldo Major through injury and recently replaced guard Aleek Pauline with Mike DiNunno and is now forced into another change with his side currently 1-4.

Cheshire are said to be ‘close’ to announcing a replacement for Murray while MVP’s Mark Woods is reporting that former NBA player Julius Hodge is a potential target that would replace American Brad Karp.
