England under-16’s made it two wins out of two at the European Championships after defeating Romania 68-47 in Strumica on Thursday.
Alan Keane’s side improved to a 2-0 record after leading from tip to buzzer having beaten Scotland 94-51 in their Division B opener on Wednesday.
Carl Wheatle added his second double-double of the tournament with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Luke Mitchell was the only other player in double figures, scoring 12.
The teams were level at 8-8 in the early stages before Nelson Boachie-Yiadom’s 3-pointer gave England a lead they would not relinquish. A run of seven straight points towards the end of the first gave helped establish a 20-12 advantage after the opening quarter.
Mitchell pushed the lead into double figures with a score from beyond the arc and England maintained their control throughout to go into the half-time break ahead at 38-25.
An 8-0 start to the second half pushed the differential beyond 20 points as England began to cruise towards their second victory, taking a commanding 54-35 lead into the final quarter.
There was to be no let up in the final period as England outscored their opponents to complete a 68-47 success with the scoring rounded off by a triple from Thai Segwai-Lodge – meaning that 11 of the 12 got on the scoreboard.
England return to action against Estonia on Friday with the tip at 15:30 UK time.
