Hoopsfix Podcast Ep.5: Interview with Drew Sullivan

Great Britain captain, Drew Sullivan, might just be the most recognisable face in the country when it comes to British basketball.

Having played a large part of his career in England, sandwiched around stints in Spain and Russia amongst other places, he is one of the most successful players of his generation, captaining the GB squad since the programme’s re-creation in 2006. So, of course, it is only natural we got him on the show to talk hoops in depth!

In this podcast, here from Drew on:

  • How he first got into basketball, after a freak accident on an athletics track
  • How he made the jump to the US at 16, and within a year was ranked in the top 100 players in the US (& top 50 by his Senior year!)
  • Why he chose Villanova and what the whole recruiting process was like
  • How he became a defensive stopper and why he thinks it could’ve hurt his career
  • What his first pro year was like
  • His competitive nature and his thoughts on trash talking
  • The current state of the BBL and what he would like to see improved
  • The early years of the GB programme
  • What it was like to be in the 2012 Olympics so close to where he grew up
  • His hopes for the future and passion for martial arts

It’s another big one – whole thing goes just short of two hours, but it’s a must listen for any true British basketball fan!

As always, I’d love to get your feedback, come back after you’ve listened and lets get some discussion going in the comments.

The show has been approved on iTunes – find it here and please subscribe to automatically receive new episodes straight to your phone/computer/tablet (ignore the BBC 5 Live podcast it has automatically pulled in on iTunes, I’m working on getting it removed)!
