Bristol Begin Assembling Roster Ahead of Debut BBL Campaign

Bristol Flyers have re-signed four players from last year’s squad and added American guard Doug Herring Jr. as they prepare for life in the BBL.

The club also announced that RSG will be the main sponsor for the coming season. CEO of RSG Mike Beesley is pictured above with Flyers captain Greg Streete and Bristol Sport CEO Andrew Billingham.

Streete joins Roy Owen, Jordan Ranklin and American Doug McLaughlin-Williams in staying with Bristol for another season.

“Returning to the Flyers for another season is a great feeling for me and my family but to be returning and entering the BBL is a huge accomplishment for our club and our city,” Streete said. “I am so honoured to be the captain of this great setup and I really hope me, my team-mates and our coaching staff make Bristol proud.”

Local born forward Ranklin commits to a fourth consecutive season with the Flyers while Owen is another returnee with the guard bringing previous BBL experience from a spell with Worcester. 29-year-old forward McLaughlin-Williams has been influential for the Flyers on both ends and helped upset BBL opposition Surrey United in their first taste of top-flight action.

And head-coach Andreas Kapoulas was delighted to have kept hold of their services: “All 4 of them have been the main core of our programme in EBL Division 1 and its so exciting to have them all back in our first year in the British Basketball league. One of our biggest strengths over the years has been that we have kept a core of players together while adding young talented academy players to the mix. This is our recipe for success and we will look to continue with our Club ethos and style of play.”

As for Herring, the 6’3″ guard played in Canada’s top league with the St. John Mill Rats having spent his first two seasons as a pro in the American APBL with the Hudson Valley Kings. In 44 games, Herring averaged 18 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game whilst shooting at above 40% from beyond the arc.

The 26-year-old said of signing with the Flyers: “I’m very pleased to be joining the Bristol Flyers. I believe they will be a great fit for the next stage in my career. Talking to Coach Kapoulas, we are excited to compete in their inaugural season in the BBL.”

Kapoulas added: “Doug will fit in well to the existing team. He’s a very talented player and he is coming to us after a great season in the professional league in Canada. He strengthens our back court significantly and he is bringing in the much needed experience required at the guard spot for our first year in the BBL. He will be a great fit for our programme and a great role model for our younger players. We really look forward to working with him.”
