England U16s Go 0-2 in Denmark

England Under-16s had a rough time in Denmark for their final preparation games before the Euros as they went 0-2 against the host team whilst suffering some unwanted injuries.

In Game 1 England went down 74-51 to Denmark, finding themselves with a 17 point deficit at halftime and unable to make it up over the second half. Denzel Ubiaro broke his nose and Carl Wheatle suffered a knock to the head but both are expected to be fit for the Europeans. Calvin Kintu and Josh Steel lead England with 9 points each.

In the second game, England fell 71-54, but put in a better performance, leading by two at halftime. It was an early third quarter run from Denmark that provided the cushion for them to run out winners. Calvin Kintu once again led England with 18 points, whilst Akwasi Yeboah added 11.

Head coach Andreas Kapoulas felt the games were experiences the team needed to help them at the Europeans.

“Denmark is one of the favourites to win a medal and promotion to Div A,” Kapoulas said. “They were a very strong test for us just before the Europeans and I think the experiences from the two games will prove very useful for our group games in Bosnia.

“We have learned a lot during the months of June/July and its now time to put it into practise. We have a good family atmosphere and I think that will be really important when the games begin next week. We will concentrate on one game at a time so for now all the focus goes to Romania.”

The Under-16s begin the Division B European Championship in 1 week, drawn in Group B where they will face Ireland, Switzerland, Slovenia and Romania, who they open up against on the 8th August.
