GB U20s Open Europeans with a Win Over Slovak Republic

The Great Britain Under-20s got the Division B European Championships started the right way with a 75-62 victory over the Slovak Republic on Friday afternoon.

Devon van Oostrum was dominant once again on his way to 29 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and was glad they got the crucial opening day victory.

“Good opening game for us,” he said after the game. “We wanted to win, got the win that’s all that matters right now.”

Prior to the tournament the Slovak Republic had played few international warm-ups, with the GB staff unable to get much game tape to prepare as they normally would.

“We didn’t know anything about them,” continued van Oostrum. “I watched them last year, I know they had (Oliver) Tot, a good point guard but we didn’t know anything. Every game is important and I’m glad we got this one out the way.”

Raphell Thomas-Edwards added 11 points and captain Joe Hart finished with 9, as the Slovak Republic made it anything but easy, reducing the deficit to 6 points at points late in the fourth quarter.

“During our preparation leading up, we haven’t had blowouts, we’ve had these tight games, we’re used to that,” said head coach Doug Leichner. “This wasn’t our first fight, we’re used to what they’re doing. We took a couple punches and we gave a few, and at the end were able to get the result we needed.”
