GB U20s Defeat Luxembourg to Move to 2-0

The Great Britain Under-20s moved to 2-0 at the Division B European Championships with a 106-92 victory over Luxembourg on Saturday afternoon.

It wasn’t as easy as many expected, as they trailed at the half after jumping out to a big early lead, but a more dominant second half watched them get their second win in as many days in Romania.

“It was the perfect storm,” said head coach Doug Leichner after the game. Luxembourg shot 60%for the game and 53% from beyond the arc. They presented many defensive problems as they play with 5 perimeter players. Alex Laurent is a highly talented player and it may sound funny but we made him earn his 29 points.

“It is difficult to go against a zone for 40 minutes but that was the issue as we shot 41% from three point land. Devon played one of his best floor games as he was a general putting players in the right position and distributed the ball having 11 assists. Nick Lewis was very aggressive and Joe Hart shot with tremendous confidence. Raphell Thomas-Edwads was a huge factor as he had 17 points, and more importantly, 15 rebounds. James Vear and Marc Steutel had us well prepared for this tough contest.”

Nick Lewis led GB with 23 points, Devon van Oostrum had 18 points and 5 rebounds along with his 11 dimes, whilst Joe Hart hit six threes on his way to 18 points.

GB will now take on Romania on Sunday at 5:30pm UK time as they look to keep their perfect record intact.

Box score.
