England U16s Suffer Tight Loss to Czech Republic

England Under-16s suffered a three point loss to the Czech Republic on Thursday, going down 61-58 as the build up to their European Championship continued.

Despite holding a slim five point lead after three quarters, the fourth proved too much as the hosts escaped with a narrow win.

“Today was another step towards the right direction,” said Head Coach Andreas Kapoulas. “We led the game for the first three quarters, but poor decision making and crucial defensive breakdowns down the stretch costed us the game. We are getting better every day and we look forward to another strong test tomorrow.”

Luke Mitchell (’98) had 17 points on 6/7 shooting to lead England, whilst Calvin Kintu added 9.

The two teams meet again on Friday as they both prepare for the FIBA Europe U16 European Championship Men Division B in Sarajevo which begins on August 8.

England have been drawn in Group B of the competition and will face opening round games against Ireland, Romania, Slovenia and Switzerland.
