England U16s Return from Spain Winless

England Under-16s returned from their Madrid trip without a win, after falling to two heavy defeats at the hands of Spain.

In their opener on Friday night, England fell 84-52 to the Spanish side as they got their first taste of Division A standard. Spain hounded England defensively, and were out running on the offensive end as they won by 32 points. Calvin Kintu had 18 points to lead England, whilst Akwasi Yeboah had 7 points and 8 rebounds. On Saturday, it was a fifty-one point defeat, losing 89-38 after a dysmal second half that saw England turn the ball over 16 times. Aidan Gastaldi-Davies top scored with 13 points and Akwasi Yeboah was once again the second leading scorer with 8 (box score).

“We are very pleased to have been invited here by the Spanish federation. It speaks volumes for the quality of the England programme that we are building,” said head coach Andreas Kapoulas upon England’s return. “Whilst from a pure score sheet perspective it may look like we didn’t do all that well, the learning and experience from these games will give us a solid bedrock for our campaign to get back to division A in August of this year.”

Kapoulas and his England squad will now look ahead to July with a tournament in Denmark likely to be the next part of their preparation.
