Three years after getting drafted, Great Britain Senior Women’s star Jo Leedham has signed a rookie contract with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun.

Selected in the third round of the 2010 WNBA Draft with the 27th overall pick, Leedham from Ellesmere Port, averaged a team-high 16.2 points along with 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Leedham is not unfamiliar with Connecticut, where she was the New England Prep School Player of the Year in 2005 at Connecticut’s Cheshire Academy.

“It’s been a few years since we drafted her, so we are excited to see what she can bring to our team,” Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said.

With the WNBA regular season running from the end of May until September, and playoffs/finals going into October, the news means there is a chance GB’s star player will not be with the side at Eurobasket 2013 which will take place from 15th-30th June in France.

Leedham is currently plying her trade with French Euroleague side Bourges, who she signed with late in the season. In 3 Euroleague appearances so far she is averaging 9.3 points. 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, whilst averaging 11 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals on 61.2% shooting from the field in four appearances in France’s LFB.

The 5’10” guard is the all-time leading scorer in the history of NCAA Division II women’s basketball, collecting 3,050 points at Franklin Pierce. As a senior, she led Division II, averaging 26.9 points per game while guiding the Ravens to a 32-2 overall record and a spot in the Final Four.

As per team policy, terms were not released.

Massive congrats to Jo Leedham!
