The Great Britain women fell to 0-3 in Group B of the Olympic women’s tournament, as they lost 67-61 to Russia at the Basketball Arena on Wednesday.
Russia, who appeared as though they couldn’t miss for stretches of the game, were too much for GB, who once again couldn’t make plays down the stretch.
Natalie Stafford led GB with 18 points, a game-high, with Jo Leedham adding 14 points.
GB coach Tom Maher was positive after the game:
“I thought it was an excellent performance. This is the second time we’ve ever played Russia in our history in a proper tournament. They’re a famous basketball country, and we played well, we just couldn’t get it together in the end.”
Stafford echoed Maher’s opinions:
“We battled really hard as a team. Russia is a great basketball nation and a great team and we worked really hard but we made some crucial errors down the stretch and it was lost from there.”
GB will look to bounce back against France on Friday.

The women battled really hard and the support from the crowd was amazing – although too quiet at times on crucial periods of defence. The Russians were so much better from 3 point land – we could not match their outside shooting. Tenacious D and alround effort just couldn’t get us the win. However, the exposure for women’s basketball via the performances of the GB team can surely only generate more interest and involvement at the younger ages – it’ll be interesting to see how this manifests itself.
All the womens games have been great to watch, possibly more so than some of the mens games, especially the game against France which they were so unluck to lose.
Well played Team GB.
