The Nike World Basketball Festival visited Brixton on Saturday, an event that saw two NBA stars – one current and one former – in attendance.
Brixton’s own and starting small forward for the Chicago Bulls, Luol Deng, joined two time Olympic Gold medallist, Scottie Pippen, as the South London district opened it’s doors to fans for a day-long event of urban beats and international basketball.
Both Chicago old and new guard spent the morning providing coaching tips and dispensing advice, which for Deng in particular, struck a chord.
“When I was younger, I was always like ‘I wish I had a player from here that’s in the NBA that I can ask questions or I can see and I can relate to’. All these kids see that I came from here and it’s the same thing they going through.”
Growing up, Deng was like every other child on the playground, claiming the name of a current NBA star with the aim of emulating their success. For the then little-Luol the player he would select would be
