The BBC has today announced they will be live broadcasting the Team GB vs USA Olympic basketball warm ups that are to take place in Manchester next week.

The Men’s game will be available on BBC Three and BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra with the Women’s on BBC Red Button. Both matches will be simulcast on bbc.co.uk/sport.

Dan Markham, the Vice Present NBA EMEA thinks it is a big step forward for the sport in the UK:

“To have the BBC support the GB versus USA men’s and women’s basketball games in Manchester is hugely significant for the on-going growth of the sport in the UK. The cross-platform visibility the BBC coverage will provide is fitting for a sport that is enjoyed by millions of fans around the globe.”

Rishi Persad will present the Men’s game live from Manchester with commentary for both matches from the BBC’s Olympic basketball team Mike Carlson and John Amaechi.

Full details of the broadcasts are as follows:

Team GB Women v USA Women

· Wednesday 18 July, 19.00-21.30, BBC Red Button and bbc.co.uk/sport (commentary only)

Team GB Men v USA Men

That’s great news. Although, it’s better news that Matt and I will be there in person. You attending Sam?

I’ll be there providing my media accreditation application gets approved. It has been submitted, just waiting to hear back!

This is great news. I am only sad that it takes a match as big as this for the BBC to broadcast it.

The money that they have spent on the HIGHLIGHTS package for Match of the day is ridiculous. If they could pile that money into the so called minor sports then basketball would get more coverage.

Great news, especially as they’ve got someone credible to do the commentary in Carlson.

But we do have to put up with Amaechi.

Great news. Just a pity that BBC weren’t in Sheffield / Meadowhall over last weekends 3 on 3 competition. This showed very powerfully the state of British Basketball with everything from under13′s to the Old Masters. Superb display of quality ball at all levels with some amazing teenagers coming through.
I’ll be at the event, thankfully. Couldn’t afford the best tickets but won two tickets with the Standard Life competition!!!!!
