GB’s Lawrence Expected to Lead Charleston

Andrew Lawrence

With the loss of veteran guards Donavan Monroe and Andrew Goudelock (who was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers), Great Britain’s Andrew Lawrence (1990 born) is expected to be a centre piece of the College of Charleston’s team this coming year.

Going into his junior year, Lawrence had a break out summer after being a surprise addition to the GB Senior roster at Eurobasket in Lithuania, an experience which has served him well. Talking to College of Charleston Sports he said:

“It was an amazing experience getting to represent your country at that level…playing in Lithuania against Lithuania was probably the best game environments I’ve ever been a part of in my life.

“I hope to bring some leadership with Donavan Monroe and Andrew Goudelock graduating. I can’t wait to be in that gym competing and playing. I love all of my new teammates, so it’s going to be a great year.”

Cougar Associate Head Coach Mark Byington expects a lot from the 6’3″ guard this season:

“It’s Andrew’s turn to run the team. The guys look to him and they respect him. The coaches trust him. He’s one of the few guys on our team who has been through the ups-and-downs of a season, and been through adversity.

“We’re going to put a lot on him this year and he’ll be able to handle it. There were times in our practices, even back to his freshman year, where he would finish the practice as the second-best player on the floor. He has talent and has all of the ability to a great leader on the court. He is going to have more freedom from us to play his game this year. To say we’re expecting big things from him this year is an understatement.”

Byington added that Lawrence is looking a lot more aggressive than they have seen him at practice before, and will look to see him score the ball more this season. Last year the Londoner average 5.8 points in 24 minutes per outing.

Elsewhere in the US college system, GB U20 Adam Thoseby has been performing well with the Utah State Aggies, so much so he is tipped to have the starting small forward spot locked up as a freshman, according to Tony Jones a local sports reporter.
