Wonder how many of these guys gave full and serious consideration to their future before going to the US?

I know from experience that so many just want to go, and fail to consider what happens after college and what happens after any, possible, career in basketball is over.

Almost certainly none will make NBA but some (as above) may manage to play for European clubs.

After their playing days are over, what then, especially if they do not sign with any European club, or they are not some of the top players able to command a sufficent salary and save to fund their future after basketball.

Of course they have, one assumes, fulfilled their dream and had a fantastic experience….but. life after 30 and for the next 50(?!!) or more years?

My advice?!! Definitely go (US or Europe) if you have the chance – but, be, fully, aware,- don’t assume.

Reply

nobody October 11, 2011 at 5:55 pm

A god point – I am really surprised as the amount of moving about. If you plan to go to the USA it is important to thing about graduating first and just let the basketball take it course. Go to US colleges is not about development, it all about the win loss record of a coach. If you want to develop you have to work hard on your game – once the recruitment is done all the hype is over.

Some players have done well but most of our guys will be just bench players so it is important to choose the right path so that you can enjoy the experience and at least try and graduate.

Anyway good luck to all and nice work SAM

Reply

Sam Neter October 11, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Good lookin’ out. Edited. I may do a list of High School/Prep players, not sure. It’s a lot of work. This one has taken freakin’ ages!

Reply

Dave October 12, 2011 at 6:27 am

its a great list Sam, thanks for putting it together. :)
Ive visited lots of US colleges and for the vast vast majority of our kids going there it promises a great life experience. The comment re coaches is probably on the money, in most cases they are there to win games so players wil need to be self motivated and dedicated to progress in the system. However the facilities and quality of study are generally high. Everyone should remember its student athletes…..come on…….. youve seen coach carter right :)

What happened to Ryan Martin? He played at Barking Abbey in London and then played at Bridgton Academy in Maine last year. Did he not sign with any U.S. college? Is he back in England? He was a talented 6’7 PF.
