Loreto College were crowned the first ever 2011 EB/BCS Under 19 National Champions yesterday after beating SEEVIC 82-72 in the final behind an MVP performance from Tom Devitt at the Doug Ellis Centre, Birmingham.

Devitt finished with 9 points, but controlled the tempo of the game whilst setting the tone defensively. Joe Kilpatrick led Loreto with 14 points, whilst Josh McGinn had 12. Shore Adenekan led SEEVIC with 17, whilst William Ashby added 16.

It was Hackney who took 3rd place, after squeezing out a close victory, 88-86 over Milton Keynes in the 3rd/4th place playoff.

In the semi-finals, Loreto got past Hackney with a 105-83 victory, behind a 44 point performance from rising young big man Jack Crook (1993 born). McGinn chipped in with 21, whilst Peter Olisemeka and Prince Lartey led Hackney with 18 points a piece.

In the other semi final, SEEVIC saw off Milton Keynes 72-61 behind 21 points from Adenekan. Connor Washington led Milton Keynes with 24 points.

2010/2011 EB/BCS U19 Mens Premier Schools Competition Final Standings

1st Loreto College
2nd SEEVIC
3rd Hackney Community College
4th Milton Keynes College

The final fours event was a culmination of the first ever season of competition for the elite EB/BCS U19 colleges competition. The invitation only competition includes teams from Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) institutions and schools/colleges that have historically shown a high level of performance in EB and BCS competitions. A total of 30 teams took part, divided into four leagues to play each other twice (home and away). The top two teams from each league advanced to the quarter finals and the winners of those matchups were the teams competing in Birmingham yesterday.

Seems like the teams involved were quite evenly matched…maybe the junior National League should be looking to switch to a similar format?

The only reason Loretto beat Hackney was because Helio got injured in the 2nd quarter and was out for the day, when he was in the game Hackney had full control of the game and were up 10 but when he was off the team lacked energy and a leader. But give credit to Loretto for capitalising.
