Alexander Scotland-Williamson (1990 born), a 6’9″ 235lb forward from London has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at the University of Alabama Birmingham next season, joining fellow Londoner Ovie Soko.

Scotland-Williamson, has spent the last season at JUCO Lee (Texas) College, where he has career averages of seven points and six rebounds per game and moved into a starting role early during his sophomore season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Blazers.

UAB Head Coach Mike Davis said:

“I think Alex has a chance to turn into a big-time player for us. With his size, athleticism and potential, there is no doubt that his best basketball is ahead of him. He has already developed tremendously and he will continue to improve his game and be a dynamic player for us.”

Scotland-Williamson is also excited about joining the UAB basketball program, speaking exclusively to Hoopsfix about why he chose UAB and what he feels he can bring to the team, he said:

“I chose UAB because after all that I have been through in my journey here in America and in basketball, it felt like home. The coaching staff are amazing and I know that they have my best interests at heart and will allow me the opportunity to be not only a great basketball player but a great person off the court. The campus and facilities are awesome and the general community of UAB invited me in with open arms-as soon as I got there I knew it was the place for me .”

“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity. I feel I can be a monster presence defensively and on the boards and as I continue to develop I believe I will be a problem for the other team offensively inside and out. I just ca’nt wait to play with the team and bring my energy to the table.”

Despite not knowing Ovie before visiting UAB, it was Soko who hosted his visit and Scotland-Williamson says he played a role in his signing.

Lee College Associate head coach Marcus King said Scotland-Williamson’s intangible qualities are exceptional and will be a terrific addition for UAB.

“Alex is the true meaning of the term `student-athlete’. His numbers are misleading because we have five other division I signees from this team. He is someone who worked his way into the starting lineup as a freshman despite playing only several years of competitive basketball. He has great size, athleticism and has even better desire and work ethic. Without a doubt, his potential is meeting reality.”

Scotland-Williamson spent his last season in the UK at Barking Abbey basketball academy. He also received interest from schools such as Portland, Hawaii, James Madison, Valpo, Pepperdine, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, San Fransisco, Iona and Texas A & M Corpus Christi.
