Mensah-Bonsu Stewart Ward-Hibbert
England Basketball today named the respective winners in each category of the English Player of the Year 2010 award.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu was victorious in the senior men’s category after his scintillating performance with Team GB during their successful Eurobasket 2011 qualifying run, where they qualified at the top of their group with a 6-2 record. He led the tournament in rebounds per game, hauling down an impressive 13.5 per outing, whilst also scoring 19 ppg.

His performance over the summer, landed him a roster spot with the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets where he is currently recovering from elbow surgery.

In the Under-18 men’s category, it was Sheffield Junior Shark John Stewart who took the title after an impressive year with both club and National side. It is another award for his trophy case after leading his team to the 2010 Sureshot National Cup title with an MVP performance, being named the inaugural winner of the Keith Mitchell Memorial Award, being selected to the Midnight Madness Finals Night team, and also being invited to the Basketball Without Borders camp for the top 50 players in Europe where he was named to the All Star team.

In the Under 16 men’s category, rising young star Josh Ward-Hibbert got the nod. Ward-Hibbert who plays his club basketball with the Derby Trailblazers, captained the England U16’s team at their Division B European Championships, where he was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 18.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 3.6 steals across 8 games.

In the Women’s categories, Julie Page was named Senior English Player of the Year, whilst Temi Fagbenle and Shequila Joseph took the U18 and U16 titles respectively.
