Video: The Best Game Winner EVER (That Never Counted)

This would have been one of, if not the, best play I’ve ever witnessed if it had counted. Down 43-44 with under a second remaining in an U18 Semi Final at the Midnight Madness All-Nighter, things were looking pretty bleak for Ed Lucas’ team.

The ball is inbounded, Ed recieves it a couple of feet behind the half way line and launches a prayer with one hand. As he throws it, he thinks he gets fouled, so instantly turns to the ref and starts fighting his case. The ball is still flying through mid-air..his back is turned to the hoop…it hits the backboard, and BOOM goes in. The place erupts..Ed still hasn’t realised it has gone in.

The magical moment: watch as he is mobbed, realises he made it and his face changes from disgust to joy. Amazing. Easily one of the best things I have ever filmed, don’t even get me started on the refs disallowing it.

Three reasons why it should have counted;

1) The whistle is clearly blown after it has been released from his hand.

2) The referee on the baseline (watch it again and check him out) puts his hands in the air signalling it will count, and when it goes in counts it.

3) It’s Midnight Madness! This aint no official FIBA competition, give the fans what they want!

What do you think?

Best Gamewinner Ever

Ed Lucas complains to the ref, but the ball is still in flight...

But even if time was up… he threw de ball before the ref blows the whistle, so it should count, right?

The look on his face is priceless, he really has no idea why everyone is going crazy. Great stuff Sam.

If you dont have time to take a shot, why let them inbound the ball?

best call ‘EVER’ i think it is a shame when idiots don’t no how the game of basketball is played you need time on the clock to score a bucket looks good trust me it really does look cool but what a shame. He needs Alex Ferguson’s watch for that to count as a game winner………

Timing of the whistle isn’t really relevant, the ref will have known exactly how long was left and just has to decide if the shot was in time. No point using the clock as the margin of error in pushing the button twice is way too big. He’s right to make the call immediately rather than wait or there would have been mayhem. Not sure what the official on the baseline is doing! He has no responsibility to be looking where the ball is to make a call on the release of the ball.

Be cool. Critical is fine, but if you're rude, we'll delete your stuff.
