GB Men Suffer First Defeat of Campaign, Lose to Macedonia

Pops Mensah Bonsu had another double double but it wasn't enough

The GB Men suffered their first defeat of their Eurobasket qualifying campaign last night, being routed by Macedonia 75-56.

In what was a less than impressive performance, GB were down by 20+ points at times, and if it wasn’t for Pops Mensah-Bonsu’s 17 points and 13 rebounds the margin of defeat would have been a lot larger. Luol Deng had a rare off night finishing 14 points 9 boards and 8 turnovers, having only had three points at half-time.

Kieron Achara made his biggest contribution of the campaign so far with 7 points and 6 boards in 18 minutes. Full box score and play by play available here.

GB Head Coach, Chris Finch said after the game:

“All credit to Macedonia tonight. They played a great game.In some ways, we felt this loss coming. We lacked focus tonight and we will have to get that back in Liverpool. We played better in the second half and got some open shots, but we just couldn’t knock down any open jumpers.”

Team GB now return home where they will take on Bosnia & Herzegovina on Thursday at the Echo Arena, Liverpool.
